America Reads Challenge

February 4, 2010

JOHNSON CITY, TN - The America Reads Challenge Program at East Tennessee State University has been selected for participation in a new initiative, Read. Write. Act. (RWA) Virtual Learning Community.

The program was created by the Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education (SCALE), part of the College of Education at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. A limited number of participants were chosen for memberships provided by the Verizon Foundation.

The ETSU chapter of the America Reads literacy program will receive a $500 year's membership in SCALE. Two ETSU student leaders and a program administrator will participate in four virtual conferences or institutes during 2010. In addition, the ETSU program will have access to the RWA Virtual Learning Community blogs, wikis and social networks; can apply for $100 mini-grants for National Literacy Action Week; and will receive two professional virtual conferencing headsets with microphones.

For further information, contact ETSU's Teresa Brooks Taylor at (423) 439-7776.
