Appalachian Music Project Offers Free Music Lessons

The Appalachian Music Projectat The University of Virginia’s College at Wiseresumed Jan. 23.AMP is an after-school music program connecting K-12 students in the Wise County area with qualified private music instructors at no cost to students or their families. Students are offered lessons and mentored in practice activities by UVA Wise music majors.AMP students are providedaccess to campus practice facilities in the Gilliam Center for the Arts.

Each week, AMP students will have an individual 30-minute lesson with a qualified instructoronthe instrument of their choice–current offeringsinclude voice, piano, guitar, and wind and brass instruments. Lesson times are available Mondays and Tuesdays between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m., depending on the instructor’s availability.

In these lessons, students spend one-on-one time with an AMP instructor and are guided through instruction on their chosen instrument. Lessons include music reading and basic music theory, physical technique, musical expression, relevant music history, performance etiquette, and practice methods. All lessons occur in the Gilliam Center for the Arts at UVA Wise.

In addition to their weekly individual lesson,AMP students receive oneassisted practice session per week with the AMP’s Practice Facilitatorsat the Gilliam Center for the Arts.Practice times occur on either Wednesdays or Thursdays, at the same time as a student’s Monday or Tuesday lesson. AMP students also performintwo recitals per semester.

The Appalachian Music Project is designed to make high-quality music education, in the form of individualized student music lessons by qualified music educators, available to all interested students, regardless of economic ability. AMP forges access to music educators, musical instruments (based on availability) and studio facilities to foster the artistic, intellectual, and emotional development of the next generation of musicians to sustain the prolific musical heritage, across musical genres, in southwestern Virginia.

Spring 2023 lessons run from Monday, Jan. 23through Thursday, May 4. Enrollment is on a rolling, first-come-first-served basis.
