JOHNSON CITY – Applications are available for the inaugural Dr. Thomas Jenrette Vocal Scholarship Competition at East Tennessee State University.
The competition is open to all first-year voice majors in either music performance or music education, and recipients must enroll for four consecutive years. The first-place award is $15,000 per year, or a total of $60,000, and the second-place award is $5,000 per year, $20,000 total.
The scholarship was established earlier this year by longtime ETSU Department of Music supporters James and Sandy Powell in honor of Jenrette upon his retirement.
Jenrette, professor emeritus of music, served as director of choral activities in the department of music for 33 years. During his tenure, his students toured Austria, Hungary, France, Germany, Italy, England, Venezuela, Costa Rica and the former Yugoslavia. In addition, they performed for the Intercollegiate Men's Choruses Association, American Choral Directors Association, Tennessee Music Educators Association and Music Educators National Conference, and they appeared twice in the White House during the terms of presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.
The deadline for application is Thursday, Jan. 10.
Auditions are scheduled for Jan. 26 and Jan. 27. The application form, with information on specific requirements, is available at www.etsu.edu/music under "Admission and Scholarships."
