Art From the Heart provides fun in winter

January 28, 2025

At exactly 6:36 p.m., Feb. 6, art lovers will be dashing through The Arts Depot, Abingdon, Virginia, to try and get coveted works of art. The scramble begins when the art is unveiled and the game is to find the favorites before someone else snatches them off the wall.

Art From the Heart is The Arts Depot’s well-known ‘6 x 6’ sale offering more than 100 pieces of original art by skilled local artists. Open to the public, folks gather in the Spotlight Gallery and enjoy free hors d’oeuvres and beverages before the sale. Artists donate original artworks and each piece sells for only $36. The name ‘6 x 6’ refers to the size of the canvases; 6 inches by 6 inches. Proceeds benefit art education programs and gallery exhibits at The Arts Depot throughout the year.

The spectacle of people rushing to find their favorite works of art is what keeps many people returning each year. Steve Lindemann, who has been attending the event for several years, said “I always enjoy hanging out with our friends and the art community in Abingdon.”

The 6 x 6 preview gallery is open from Jan. 29 to Feb. 5 for visitors to pick their favorites they will later try to obtain. Just before the sale, the artwork is re-arranged so no one knows where their favorites are. At 6:36 p.m. the art is unveiled, and the hunt is on.

Last year’s sale featured artwork by 76 local artists and there were more than 150 pieces of art to choose from. For newcomers and returning patrons, it is an opportunity to purchase original artwork at an affordable price, or just to watch the fun unfold.
