Funding cuts have affected many local arts organizations.
For regional arts organizations, funding from local, state and federal sources was reduced significantly in 2009, and these cuts are expected to continue in 2010.
Locally, funding from Washington County, Va., was reduced by 10% across the board to all recipients.
Statewide, the Commonwealth of Virginia has cut all departments by 15-20% including a 15% cut to the Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA). Those cuts impacted current grants from VCA. In our area, the Arts Depot and Barter Theatre have seen funding cuts from the VCA.
National funding cuts have also impacted Barter Theatre, resulting in reduced funding from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for 2009-2010.
