Arts Array films shown in Abingdon

Virginia Highlands Community College’s Arts Array Film Series show times are Monday and Tuesday evenings at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Abingdon Cinemall. Admission is free for all students and staff members of Virginia Highlands Community College, Emory & Henry College, King University, East Tennessee State University and Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, including participants in the College of Older Adults who purchase an Arts Array pass. Community admission is $7.75.

“Mister Smith Goes to Washington” is on screen March 1. A naïve youth leader (James Stewart) is appointed to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate. His idealistic plans promptly collide with corruption at home and subterfuge from his hero (Claude Rains) in Washington, but he tries to forge ahead despite attacks on his character.

Walt Disney Animation’s “Big Hero 6” is shown March 7 and 8. When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called “Big Hero 6.”

“A Star is Born” is on screen March 14 and 15. Norman Maine (James Mason), a movie star whose career is on the wane, meets showgirl Esther Blodgett (Judy Garland) when he drunkenly stumbles into her act one night. A friendship develops, then blossoms into romance before tensions increase as Esther’s career takes off while Norman’s continues to plummet.

“The Breakfast Club” is shown March 21 and 22. Five high school students meet in Saturday detention and discover that they have more in common than they thought. Stars Emilio Estavez, Judd Nelson & Molly Ringwald.

“Twilight” is on screen March 28 and 29. When Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) moves to a small town in the Pacific Northwest, she falls in love with Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a mysterious classmate who reveals himself to be a 108-year-old vampire.
