ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Thanks to a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the Asheville Art Museum and its partner, the Knoxville Museum of Art in Knoxville, TN, will create a nationally replicable model based on the Asheville Art Museum's More Than Math program.
The project will result in a full plan that will determine how More Than Math would work with the Knoxville Museum of Art and its audience, but also how the model could be developed for use by other museums, teachers and students across the country.
First piloted in 2001 and fully implemented in 2002, More Than Math integrates the visual arts into the third through eighth grade mathematics curriculum and exposes students to new and creative ways to visualize mathematical concepts, enabling them to see the connections between math and art.
The Asheville Art Museum is the only organization in the state of North Carolina to receive a 2010 IMLS National Leadership Grant. The largest museum and library joint grant program administered by IMLS, National Leadership Grants support projects that will advance the ability of museums and libraries to preserve culture, heritage, and knowledge while enhancing learning.
