This exhaustive reference on pre-1950 Tennessee pottery is the result of more than 30 years of research by archaeologists Samuel D. Smith, of the Tennessee Division of Archaeology, and Stephen T. Rogers, of the Tennessee Historical Commission.
The book presents detailed descriptions of 199 known pottery sites, organized by county, and biographical information on over 500 Tennessee potters, accompanied by photographs, graphics, charts, background information on pottery technology and history, and notes on characteristics of documented wares. The work gives thorough coverage of its historic time period, encompassing traditional earthenware and stoneware production as well as later factory and art potteries.
