Caden Spiva recently placed Best in Show at ArtEx, an exhibit highlighting the talents of local high school students. His watercolor artwork was entitled “Ethos.” The judge for the show was Steven Reeves.
Caden says that art has also been a passion, and he’s had art teachers who have played a huge role in helping him get to where he is with his art today.
“My biggest influence in art is my high school art teacher Mr. Graham at Tennessee High. He never failed to push me to create something new and different and would always make sure to call me out for procrastinating with a piece.
“I find the most interesting thing about art to be that it is so personal. In class, I would always know exactly who did which piece because of how everyone has their own distinct processes in their work. I would say my style in art is very flashy, I always love to add a pop of color or some cool designs to spark up a piece.
“My preferred medium is acrylic, because of how quick it is to dry. I find that with slower drying medium like oil, I tend to overwork,” he says.
Caden uses his art as a way to escape. He says that sketching is a way to feel free and deal with anxiety.
He will attend the University of Tennessee in the fall, where he will major in graphic design/advertising. His goal is to become a creative director. Caden is the son of Lisa and Tommy Spiva. He graduated this spring from Tennessee High School where he was a valedictorian.
