Cameron Lugo a National Finalist in String Competition

JONESBOROUGH, TN - Cameron Lugo will travel to New York City in March to compete as a national finalist in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Junior String Competition.

Lugo, the son of Ralph and Dawn Lugo of Jonesborough, earned this opportunity after winning the Southern Division of the MTNA Junior String Competition held on January 15, 2012 in Clinton, Miss. The MTNA Junior String Competition will take place on Saturday, March 24, 2012 during the MTNA National Conference in New York City. The national winner of this competition receives a cash prize and will perform in a Winners Concert during the conference.

In November 2011 Lugo was the first place winner in the Young Artists Masters Event at the Appalachian Classical Music Association Sonata Festival held in Johnson City, TN.

Lugo was also selected as one of nine finalists in the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition; finalists will compete before an audience on Saturday, February 4, 2012 for an opportunity to be a featured soloist with the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra.

Lugo, who is a home educated freshman in high school, has been studying violin since 2006 with Tim Barrett of the Academy of Strings and most recently with Dr. Thomas Joiner, Professor of Violin and Orchestral Studies at Furman University. Lugo is also a member of the Academy of Strings Ambassador Ensemble in Johnson City, TN under the direction of Tim and Kim Barrett. Lugo currently serves as concertmaster for the Symphony of the Mountains Youth Orchestra. He made his concerto debut in February 2011 performing the first movement of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor with the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra at the historic Tennessee Theatre.
