Celebrating Poetry: Carissa Dezort

March 29, 2011

She has been writing and reading poetry for as long as she can remember. As a child, she was "turned on" to poetry by the children's poet, Jack Prelutsky. A native of Annandale, Va., she plans to become a teacher after completing graduate school.

Song Choice

by Carissa Dezort

the gravelly, grey, thudding monotony of the song's beginning
there are the horns!
tinny through small electronic speakers
the slow thump of the voice begins
- more full than I expect
suddenly grows, climaxes, breaks a little
the way only a grown man's can
when he's felt the pain of love.
each time the vocals rise, they cascade into me
filling me with melancholy that cannot find a place
these words I write in response separate me somehow from sadness and
I siphon the feeling off somewhere easily forgotten
to find again when needed.
the song ends, he apologises, but no one cares to hear it.
