Acclaimed Appalachian writer Charles Dodd White discusses his new memoir “A Year Without Months” Sunday, May 7 at 3 p.m. at the Washington County Public Library in Abingdon, Virginia.
White’s writing career has delivered five novels and now a collection of 14 inter-connected essays which explore the boundaries of family, loss, masculinity and place. Contemplating the suicides of his father, uncle and son, White meditates on what it means to continue on when seemingly everything worth living for is lost.
What he discovers is an intimate connection to the natural world, a renewed impulse to understand his troubled family history and a devotion to following the clues that point to the possibility of a whole life.
White says that in much of the South and in Appalachia “the most beautiful parts of the country are still struggling to wake up from the nightmare of violent racism,” a theme which he explores in his novels: “Lambs of Men,” “A Shelter of Others,” “In the House of Wilderness” and “How Fire Runs.”
There will be book sales and signings and a reception following Weiss’s presentation.
