Clint Miller discusses his life and writing career Sunday, May 19, at 3 p.m. as part of the annual Sunday with Friends literary series at the Washington County Public Library, Abingdon, Virginia. The Abingdon native focuses primarily on his new, lightly fictionalized comic history, “Freud in America: The Funniest Story in the History of Psychology, Sex and the Subconscious.”
The book is about a six-week trip that Sigmund Freud and his young protégé Carl Jung made to America in 1909 to explain his new theories about the subconscious to the intelligentsia of young America. After facing stern criticism in Europe, Freud hoped to gain legitimacy for his theories and to revolutionize therapy in America.
“Freud in America” was on several Amazon bestseller lists and was featured in Yahoo News’s “One of 2023’s Must-Read Books on the Hilarious History of Psychology: Freud in America.” The book is also in development for a feature film adaptation.
Miller, a Harvard University graduate, is also a playwright, screenwriter, singer/songwriter, and producer. Winner of Harvard University’s Artist Development Fellowship, Miller has published philosophy and poetry in the U.K. (Cambridge Scholars Publishing) and historical drama in the U.S. (Baker’s Plays, Samuel French).
He has two tv series that have been optioned for production: “Thirteen Secrets” a true-story comedy/thriller, and “Black and Blue,” a Tarantino-style buddy cops thriller/comedy.
He currently divides his time between the U.S. and Mexico with his wife Marika and their son Tennessee.
The series is sponsored by the Friends of the Washington County Public Library, a volunteer, non-profit organization whose purpose is to help strengthen the resources of the library and to make it a dynamic force in the community.
There will be refreshments as well as book sales and signings after the event. For more information, contact the event’s coordinator, Ben Jennings, at ben.h.jennings@gmail.com.
