The College for Older Adults at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, Abingdon, Virginia, announces the commencement of its spring term for noncredit classes. The term begins Feb. 11 and runs through March 20. Special one-topic classes are scheduled to start on Mondays, beginning Feb. 17.
The College for Older Adults invites individuals aged 50 and older to join this enriching educational experience. The tuition fee of $40 grants access to all classes, allowing participants to explore a wide range of subjects.
The spring curriculum includes diverse topics such as literature, drama, natural heritage, travel, science and technology, history, safety and senior health. Special guest speakers are featured on Mondays.
Theresa Burriss continues her exploration of Appalachian regional literature teaching “Strong women in Appalachian Literature.” Her class is a deep dive into “The Dollmaker” by Harriett Arnow and Lee Smith’s novel “Fair and Tender Ladies.” If you are taking her class, please read these novels in advance.
On Monday afternoons Cindy Pojeta examines the range of Southern Gothic novels and their tales of a dark South full of eccentric characters and situations.
Judith Wylie explores Georgia author Flannery O’Connor’s short stories. The class focuses on the book “Flannery O’Connor the Complete Short Stories.” Students are encouraged to get the book now and start reading these intriguing tales.
James Kroll teaches dramatic arts with his Actors/Readers Theatre. Noted playwright Frances Ya-Chu Cowig teaches an eight-week series on playwriting.
“Our program instructors are experts in their fields and bring a vast array of knowledge to our classrooms,” said Program Director Ed Morgan. “Our classes strive to educate, enlighten and entertain.”
Program registration occurs during a Welcome Back Registration Day Jan. 29 at 10 a.m. Interested individuals are encouraged to attend to secure their spots and receive additional information about the program.
