Jeffrey Allison discovered the wonderful world of art as a student in Saltville, Va., while touring the VMFA Artmobile.
Even a "local boy" can make it in the world of fine art in Richmond. Jeffrey Allison is the Paul Mellon Collection Educator at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) and a professional photographer.
He remembers his first introduction to the VMFA -- in the parking lot of his elementary school in Saltville, Va. "As my class toured the remarkable collection of paintings housed in the VMFA Artmobile, I realized that there was a whole world of art out there that I wanted to experience. When I had the opportunity to take art classes in high school, I discovered that the films we watched on art history also came from the VMFA."
Allison majored in photography at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol and earned his MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. He received a VMFA Fellowship which he used to supplement tuition and the cost of art supplies at both institutions.
He currently teaches Advanced and Intermediate Photography at the VMFA Studio School and has taught for more than 25 years at institutions across the Commonwealth. He has also been on the faculty of East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon, and on staff at Abingdon's William King Museum.
