BRISTOL, VA - A longtime and accomplished member of the Virginia Intermont College (VIC) faculty has been selected from competitive applicants to participate in a seminar on lyric poetry at Harvard University's Center for Hellenic Studies. The seminar will explore ways to keep alive in undergraduate education classical texts such as the Iliad, Odyssey, the Homeric Hymns, the poetry of Hesiod, and the Histories of Herodotus that a generation ago were well read and understood.
Edison Jennings, assistant professor and program coordinator of VIC's Department of English and Creative Writing, was one of only 18 faculty selected from more than 60 nominees nationwide.
An accomplished writer and teacher, Jennings has published poetry and essays in a variety of journals and anthologies, including Boulevard, Kenyon Review, Slate, Southern Review and Poetry Daily, and, most recently, in The Southern Poetry Anthology: Contemporary Appalachia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the State of New York, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Warren Wilson College.
Harvard's Hellenic Center is devoted to the study of the classical Greek tradition. It brings together a variety of research and teaching interests centering on Hellenic civilization and the evolution of the Greek language and its culture as a central point of contact for the various civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean world.
The seminar will be in Washington in August and is sponsored by The Council of Independent Colleges.
