JOHNSON CITY, TN - An expanded and updated version of the music section of the Encyclopedia of Appalachia is now available online at http://encyclopediaofappalachia.com/.
The free-access online music section features nearly 200 entries, from Roy Acuff to the Zac Brown Band. The project is co-sponsored by the University of Tennessee Press and the Appalachian Regional Commission.
Dozens of scholars contributed entries to the original version of the music section, which was the largest section of the print edition of the encyclopedia, published in 2006 by the University of Tennessee Press.
The online edition of the music section combines updated entries from the print version alongside newly-commissioned entries. Among the entries are numerous biographies of major Appalachian music acts, overviews of music genres associated with the region, histories of the musical instruments played across Appalachia, and discussions of the cultural and geographical diversity of Appalachian music.
The web site points out that the music of this often misunderstood region is "Appalachia's most effective cultural ambassador and the region's chief cultural export."
The music section editor is Dr. Ted Olson, a professor in East Tennessee State University's Department of Appalachian Studies.
