JOHNSON CITY, TN – Two students representing the East Tennessee State University Department of Music's Pre-College Program were named winners in the Bristol Music Club Scholarship Auditions, which were held May 7 at First Presbyterian Church, Bristol, Tennessee.
Jimmy Liu placed first in Division III with his piano solos. He is a freshman at Science Hill High School and is a full-time student in the ETSU Pre-College music program. He takes piano lessons with Dr. Chih-Long Hu, associate professor of piano and co-director of the Pre-College Program in the Department of Music. His violin studies have been with ETSU adjunct faculty member Sean Claire. He is the son of Yubiano Liu and Xiarong Wang of Johnson City.
Annie Whaley received an honorable mention in Division III for her piano solos. She studies piano with Dr. Esther Park, ETSU assistant professor of piano and artistic director of the Pre-College Program. The homeschooled 8th grader is the daughter of Dr. N. Robb and Misty Whaley of Johnson City.
Both students performed at the final Pre-College Gala concert at ETSU's Mathes Hall the evening of May 7. Both will also go on to participate in statewide competition in June at the Tennessee Music Teachers Association conference in Nashville.
Other ETSU Pre-College Program students who will compete at TMTA are Danny Liu (piano) of Johnson City, a fourth grader at Lake Ridge Elementary School, and Reilly Williams (voice), a University High senior from Johnson City.
