ETSU presents 'Migracion: Latinx Exhibition' at Tiptop Gallery

August 26, 2024

East Tennessee State University Department of Art & Design and Tipton and Slocumb Galleries in collaboration with Language & Culture Resource Center announce the upcoming exhibition entitled “Migracion: Latinx Exhibition,” featuring works by Tennessee and Kansas-based Latinx artists. The exhibition runs through Sept. 20. A reception is held Sept. 6 from 6-8 p.m. Dr. and Mrs. Joe Bidwell, dean of ETSU College of Arts & Sciences, are the guests of honor.

Curated by ETSU alumna and KCKCC gallery director Shai Perry, the works explore themes of movement, identity and cultural heritage, “Migracion” showcases the diverse perspectives of Latinx artists through a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media installations. This exhibition not only celebrates artistic expression but also aims to provoke thoughtful discussions on the Latinx experience in today’s globalized world.

‘Migracion’ at Tipton Gallery provides a platform for Latinx artists to share their narratives, with work that distinctly narrate individual and communal journeys of resilience, and the richness of Latin American culture. The exhibition is presented as homage to the Hispanic Month and the diverse Latinx communities of Appalachian Highlands, supported by the ETSU Student Life & Enrollment, Women’s Studies, Gender & Sexuality Program, Bert C. Bach Written Word Initiative and Women’s Resource Center with UMOJA Unity Festival.

The Migracion participating artists are Kansas-based Latinx artists Marisa Adame Grady, Rico Alvarez, Dani Coronado, Erick Felix, Edwing Mendez, Nicolas Ortega, Isaac Tapia, Cesar Velez, Hugo Ximello-Salido, Emiliano Zapata and Vania Soto from Kingsport with ETSU alum Goreti Lopez and Marcelo Gisbert.

The public is also invited Monday, Sept. 9, at 3 p.m., for the poetry reading of Brazilian poet Cris Lira, also at Tipton Gallery. The Migracion exhibit is also open for viewing during the UMOJA Unity Festival Sept. 14, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Tipton Gallery, located at 126 Spring Street, Johnson City, Tennessee, serves as a dynamic space for contemporary art exhibitions and community engagement. This exhibition is part of ETSU Tipton & Slocumb Galleries’ ongoing commitment to showcasing diverse artistic voices and fostering cultural exchange and BIPOC visibility within the region.

Art enthusiasts, community members and supporters of the arts are invited to attend the reception and poetry reading to meet Latinx artists and engage with their compelling works. Admission to the reception and exhibition is free and open to the public. ETSU Tipton & Slocumb Galleries’ diversity programming is supported by the Tennessee Arts Commission’s Arts Project Support grant, East Tennessee Foundation’s Arts Fund and ETSU Student Life & Enrollment through SAAC.
