Stratton seems to both layer time and space.

Stratton seems to both layer time and space.

"From These Hills" — Misty Stratton

June 27, 2007

Another kind of reality, one that is as fragile and transitory as are memories, is evoked by Misty Stratton [Wise, Va.]. Using a traditional embroidery technique to "draw" with needle and thread on old, used flour bags, she combines the old and the new in a way that seems to layer both time and space, thereby allowing past and present to co-mingle before our eyes; in stark contrast to the banality of mass-produced consumer culture, through Stratton's work we begin to understand the labor of the hand through the physical presence of her needlework drawing.
