Highlands Ballet Company presents 'The Wizard of Oz'

March 26, 2024

Highlands Ballet brings back the classic and popular American fairy tale, “The Wizard of Oz.” The performance is April 27 at 4 p.m. in the McGlothlin Center for the Arts on the Emory & Henry College campus, Emory, Virginia.

So ... just click your heels together and follow the yellow brick road on a fantastic journey. Red shoes and rainbows, poppies and munchkins, and all of Dorothy’s friends are here for this beloved story. This great American fairy tale captures the magic of Kansas and shines a new dimension on the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and everyone’s favorite Cowardly Lion.

“It is comforting to see the ballet version of a story you’re so familiar with,” says Highlands Ballet director, Deanna Cole-Roberts. Highlands Ballet’s version of “The Wizard of Oz,” by L. Frank Baum, retells the story that has enthralled generations, thanks to the iconic film and Judy Garland’s Dorothy.

“The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” the original title, is considered the first American fairy tale because of its clear references to American locations such as Kansas and Omaha. Baum, while agreeing with authors like Louis Carroll about fantasy literature and its importance for children along with numerous illustrations, also wanted to create a story that had recognizable American elements in it like farming and industrialization.

A whirlwind away from Kansas, Dorothy and her motley group of friends embark on an adventure to the Emerald City, each in search of something different: a brain, a heart, courage, and home. Enjoy them in Highlands Ballet’s whimsical and delightful spin on this classic fairytale.

“’The Wizard of Oz’ is not your ordinary ballet experience. This surprising performance will change how you think of ballet as it amazes your senses and fills your heart with joy. Prepare to be swept up in the adventure,” says Cole-Roberts.
