Johnson City: Robin's on Roan

For 25 years, Robin McElrath owned the Frame Gallery in Johnson City's Mountcastle Center. After she sold the business and returned to her hometown of Asheville, N.C., she found she missed the challenge of owning a business, chatting with customers, getting to know them and counting them among her friends.

Two things lured her back to Johnson City - her children begged her to come home and a house on North Roan Street that McElrath had always wanted became available. "The building has so much character," she says. "I have taken pictures of this house throughout the years. It was my dream to move the frame shop here."

Less than two years after she sold her frame shop, McElrath bought the house, which now showcases home furnishings and regional art, including paintings by Nancy Jane Earnest, fiber art by Andrea Knott Brewer, pottery by Paul Anthony, custom wood furniture by Bob Weisgerber, wood turnings by Charles Smith, and photography by Jeffrey Stoner.
