Emily Jordan, William King Museum of Art’s curator of decorative and fine art, is the curator of the “Toyland: Artifacts of Youth” which opens at the museum, Abingdon, Virginia, Nov. 17.

Jordan, who joined William King in March, says this is the first “fully-curated” exhibit she’s done for the museum. She’s been involved in several other exhibits, such as the Long Rifle exhibit, but this one is entirely her responsibility.

The duties of curator include finding a concept for an exhibit, researching and locating items, conceiving of the narrative, deciding the layout and installing it. She also paints walls when necessary.

“I’m very excited to be here. I’ve always been interested in decorative arts. Growing up I wanted to create art, that’s how I got started. Many people who work in museums are still artists. But I discovered I love looking at other people’s art, much more than I enjoy creating my own,” Jordan says.

Prior to joining William King, she worked in Nashville, Tennessee, at Cheekwood Estate and the Parthenon. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, in history of art with a minor in studio art. Her concentration is on decorative arts, exhibition design and ancient Greek sculpture and archaeology.

Her research includes topics such a Greek archaic sculpture restoration, ancient Mediterranean architecture and anthropology and cataloguing materials for special collections.
