Kingsport Art Guild Celebrates 60th Anniversary

August 25, 2009

The Kingsport Art Guild (KAG) is celebrating its 60th Anniversary with a variety of events and activities. Following are highlights:

Sept. 5, 2009: As part of a free series of Art Discovery workshops, Ann Vachon and Sheryl Daniels will demonstrate Pastels from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Kingsport Renaissance Center. This "gift to the community" (materials and instruction at no cost) allows participants to try an art medium they may have always been curious about, but never enrolled in a full-time course to explore. Coming Up: Workshops in Collage, Oils, Acrylics, Monotypes, Computer Art, and Sculpture (for age 18 and older). Pre-registration required.

Opening Sept. 27, 2009: A reception from 2-4 p.m. will kick off the Kingsport Art Guild Members Show, which will be on view through Oct. 23 in the Main Gallery of Kingsport's Renaissance Center.

About the Kingsport Art Guild

Founded in 1949, the KAG is an important part of the cultural life of Kingsport, providing opportunities to study and exhibit the visual arts of the community. KAG has had a gallery in downtown Kingsport from the time the Guild was housed in the former Fine Arts Center on E. Sullivan St. and
then in a church building on Church Circle. Today, a special gallery offers members' work for sale, and the KAG gallery is in the Kingsport Renaissance Center.

KAG sponsors three art competitions a year: the Fun Fest Art Show, the annual Members Show, and the Appalachian Art Show, which is a juried show with more than $3,000 in prizes.

Through the KAG's Gallery Girls program, youth with Girls Inc. of Kingsport tour art exhibitions with a Guild docent once a month, display their own artwork at the Renaissance Center, and participate in workshops led by KAG members.
