Lab 65+ offers creative outlet for older adults

August 29, 2023

William King Museum of Art, Abingdon, Virginia, has begun a program aimed at providing a fun outlet for creativity for older adults. Called Lab 65+, its goal is to provide a space for creativity, exploration and community. The pilot program features individual hands-on creative sessions that do not build upon one another, so individuals can attend only classes that interest them.

Activities are beginner-friendly, with a focus on play and process. The cost is $15 for non-members and $10 for members per class.

This pilot program is a collaboration between William King Museum and the College for Older Adults at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center.

Upcoming classes include pottery (Sept. 11), watercolor diptychs (Sept. 18), squeegee painting (Sept. 25), collage or digital collage (Oct. 2), simple books (Oct. 9) and pottery painting (Oct. 16). In the pottery painting class, participants paint what they made in the pottery class. Fired work is picked up the following week.

Interested people can register at the museum or receive a discounted rate if they are members of the College of Older Adults and register through that program.
