Local Dancers to Perform in Jamestown Celebration

April 24, 2007

The Highlands Ballet Company, based in Abingdon, Va., will perform May 11-13 before England's Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip during Virginia's 400th Anniversary Commemoration in historic Jamestown.

Highlands Ballet is the only civic ballet company in Virginia to be selected to participate in the 400th Anniversary celebration. The organizers contacted the HBC after reading an article about its performance in the Virginia Highlands Festival and requested that the HBC submit a video of its work for consideration. Soon after, the HBC was invited to be part of the Jamestown festivities.

The HBC will perform as part of the continuous outdoor programming at Anniversary Park, near the historic Jamestown settlement where the first permanent English settlers arrived in 1607 and laid the ground-work for an experiment in democracy that became the foundation of a new nation.

The dancers, ages 14-18, have spent many hours training and rehearsing for their performance at Jamestown. The program will include pieces ranging from the classical ballet excerpt In Celtic Days to contemporary choreography based on traditional Appalachian music and dances. 276-623-0822.
