The mosiac of Tedd Blevins involved students from a variety of classes. Copper, clay, graphic design, and all manner of colorful bits made their way into the piece.
BRISTOL, VA -- Students at Virginia Intermont College have created a portrait of the late Tedd Blevins, painter and professor at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol for more than four decades before his death in 2008.
Described as "irreverent and exceptionally talented," Blevins was a colorful character. "With his rowdy charm and continual curiosity, Tedd could simultaneously inspire and provoke. Anyone who knew Tedd would agree that he was a multi-faceted individual."
To help ensure that Blevins' legacy will endure, Perry Johnson, assistant professor of art, inspired a color theory class to work on a seven-foot mosaic. The portrait was created using more than 1,700 two-inch pieces.
The mosaic began as a way for students to freely explore color with paint left on the palette after exercises and projects. As the project developed and students from other classes joined in, copper, clay, graphic design, and all manner of colorful bits made their way into the piece.
Affectionately call the "Tedd Head," the portrait hangs in the college's Student Center.
