Peyton Manning Foundation sending Youth to Barter Theatre

June 18, 2011

Bristol, TN - YWCA Tech Gyrls are enjoying a program of summer learning and fun thanks to a grant awarded by The PeyBack Foundation, established by University of Tennessee's own star quarterback (1994-1998) Peyton Manning.

The Foundation focuses its efforts in a three-state region and has donated more than $4 million to youth organizations in Indiana, Tennessee, and Louisiana since its inception. As the foundation's president, Manning is active in all major decisions concerning its initiatives.

The mission of the PeyBack Foundation is to promote future success of disadvantaged youth by assisting programs that provide leadership and growth opportunities for children at risk.

"YW Tech GYRLS is a perfect fit with the PeyBack Foundation's mission and we are thrilled to have received the opportunity to expand our summer program," states Tammy Henkel, Director of YWCA Youth Programs. YW Tech Gyrls is an afterschool enrichment program for at-risk teen girls designed to foster academic success, encourage exploration in the fields of math, science, and technology, and nurture the positive self-esteem of young women.

The Tech GYRLS expanded program will engage girls this summer Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a multitude of fun, educational activities. The program will include Techventure field trips to see female mentors who utilize technology daily in the workplace.

In addition, the grant awarded by PeyBack Foundation will enable the girls to visit stimulating locations like the Barter Theatre, as well as River's Way Outdoor Adventure Center, Museum of the Middle Appalachians, Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium, Bristol Caverns, Wetlands Water Park, state parks and pools.
