Winners of Southwest Virginia Museum's 15th Annual "A Stitch in Time" Quilt Show are announced.
BIG STONE GAP, VA - The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park congratulates the winners of the 15th Annual "A Stitch in Time" Quilt Show.
The Museum displayed more than 115 quilts this year from April 1 to May 31, celebrating a mountain tradition of artistic creation with a functional purpose. The winners, as selected by ballots submitted by park visitors, are:
• First Place: Nancy Porter-Wheeler, Chesterfield, Va., "Indian Basket" This was made by her great- Pineville, Ky., who was a Cherokee Indian. She named it "Indian Basket." It is an original design. It has been owned by four generations of the family. The design features 12 baskets.
• Second Place: Robert Mullins from Lebanon, Ohio – "Amazing 911 Quilt" Made from red, white and blue material, this quilt is a memorial to all the people who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. There are 2,914 names embroidered onto 20 yards of
material.
• Third Place: Marion Byrd from Kingsport, Tenn. – "Courageous Characters of the Bible" The challenge was to use a favorite book and turn it into a quilt. Byrd chose the Bible and turned people she admired into stories that most people would know about.
Honorable Mentions were presented to:
• Doris Jones-Sturgill from Jonesville, Va., "Triumphs in Hard Times-Dogwood" Constructed from 1,000 pieces, this quilt is based on a pattern from Better Homes and Gardens American Heritage Quilts.
• Susan Martin from Pennington Gap, Va., "Unnamed Quilt" Quilted by Vivian L. Martin, it has crossstitched violet squares.
