BIG STONE GAP, VA. - The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park congratulates the winners of the 18th Annual "A Stitch in Time" Quilt Show. The museum displayed more than 150 quilts this year on three floors from April 1 to May 31, celebrating a longstanding tradition of artistic creation with a functional purpose in the mountains.

The winners, as selected by ballots submitted by park visitors, are:

1st Place: Wanda Woodard
from Jonesville, Va., with "Butterfly Cross Stitch"
2nd Place: Pat Sanders of Coeburn, Va., with "Handkerchief Butterfly" (Quilted by Pat Sanders & Emma Hawkins)
3rd Place: Nancy Porter-Wheeler of North Chesterfield, Va., with "Pink Dream" (Quilted by two unknown women from Kentucky)

Honorable Mentions:

Alan Byrd of Kingsport, Tenn., with "Chicken Quilt" (Quilted by Marion Byrd)
Hannah Elizabeth Dalton of Galax, Va., with "String Block" (Quilted by Flo Galloway)

The staff of the Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park thanks everyone who submitted quilts for this year's show. Without the participation from regional artisans, "A Stitch in Time" would not be possible.
