In conjunction with its Feb. 18 concert, Step into the Music with the Whole Family, the Symphony of the Mountains is providing outreach programs to area schools. Teams comprised of a professional musician from the Symphony and a trained volunteer will be going to elementary schools in five Southwest Virginia counties. A lesson plan has been conceived which demonstrates the connection and progression of familiar homemade instruments to symphonic instruments, as well as fun, familiar melodies to traditionally classical themes. These presentations will be to classes of up to 40 students. The small class size will provide the children the opportunity to actively participate in the music making process as well as discussion.
