ABINGDON, VA - Virginia Sen. William Wampler stood next to an American flag he placed on the final piece of steel put into place on the Southwest Virginia Artisan Gateway during a "topping out" ceremony on Friday, April 30, 2010.
The Artisan Gateway, known as Heartwood, is scheduled to open in the summer of 2011 adjacent to Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon.
The 29,000-square-foot structure, a source of information for visitors to the area, will feature artisan galleries, a restaurant and interactive maps of the region.
