ABNGDON, VA – Abingdon Mayor Ed Morgan will honor award-winning fantasy artist and illustrator Charles Vess with a town proclamation Thursday, May 7 at 5:30 p.m.
Presented by William King Museum of Art and Mallory Fine Art, the event takes place at the Midsummer Play fountain, across from the Barter Theatre, on the corner of Main Street and Partington Place, Abingdon.
Rick Rose of Barter Theatre will be on hand to emcee the event and WKMA Art Ball committee member Mary Jane Miller will make a special presentation to Vess and Karen Shaffer. Afterward, Ed Morgan will give the proclamation reading and present Vess with the key to the town. Entertainment includes celtic harpist Sandra Parker and student dancers from Appalachian Center for Ballet.
Vess is known around the world and has called Abingdon, Virginia, his home since 1991. His works have graced the covers and interior pages of many comic book publications and book illustrations. Vess' comic credits include Marvel Comics (including cover art for "The Amazing Spider-Man"), many contributions to DC Comics (with an 11 issue run as cover artist for Swamp Thing), and the Sandman series written by Neil Gaiman. Also with Gaiman are two New York Times best-selling picture books, "Blueberry Girl" and "Instructions." He illustrated the Gaiman novel "Stardust," which was made into an acclaimed film by Paramount Pictures in 2007.
In recent years, Vess' illustrations have been enjoyed in two well received books by Charles deLint, "The Cats of Tanglewood Forest" (an expansion of a previous publication A Circle of Cats) and its companion novel, "Seven Wild Sisters." His awards include the Ink Pot, the Mythopoeic, several Spectrum Annual Gold and Silver, two Chesleys, Locus, two Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, and four World Fantasy awards.
Locally, Vess co-designed and co-sculpted the 16-foot-tall Barter Theatre fountain, Midsummer Play, dedicated in Abingdon in 2009. His most recent sculpture design, Bristol's Cultural Heritage, was installed at the Bristol Public Library in 2014. Vess is the featured artist of Bristol Rhythm & Roots, Bristol Virginia's annual music festival poster design series, in 2008, 2010 and 2015.
"Into The Green," an upcoming exhibit to open on June 5, at the William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, Virginia, features new works, personal favorites, and an exclusive gallerywide mural that will only be seen for the duration of the exhibition.
Vess will be celebrated as this year's featured artist at the Art Ball, William King Museum of Art's annual fundraiser, which will be held at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center June 6.
