Tribute to Women Honors Three in the Arts Community

April 15, 2008

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Every year, the YWCA sets aside a night to honor exceptional women across the nation.

On April 24, 2008, the Bristol YWCA hosted a "Tribute to Women" banquet to recognize 12 women from throughout the Tri-Cities area for their contributions to the artistic, cultural, educational and charitable areas of our lives. The banquet was a fundraiser for the YW.

In the arts community, the following recipients will be recognized:

  • Kathy Millhorn Hawk is an accomplished artist, educator, writer and volunteer whose dedication has advanced visual arts. She has served on the Tennessee Arts Commission, two terms as president of the Kingsport Art Guild, as well as teaching community elementary school students for more than 30 years.
  • Patsy Kelley Reading has held several leadership positions with the Watauga Valley Art League and is the Chair for the Roving Gallery. She supports the Arts in numerous ways including organizing and staging multiple art shows. Before establishing her own business, Reading Gourds, she worked as a commercial artist for 11 years.
  • Angela Mallicote Wampler is a founding member of Arts Alliance Mountain Empire (AAME) and has garnered awards for AAME, A! Magazine for the Arts and the Virginia Highlands Festival. Artist, writer, motivator and volunteer, she supports others in the arts with her skills and encouragement and has been described as the "glue" that holds the arts together for our region. She is a lifelong resident of the Bristol area.
