Virginia Celebrates Children and the Arts

October 26, 2011

MINDS WIDE OPEN is a statewide initiative to raise public visibility of the size and scope of the arts and cultural industry in Virginia, while building collaborations and partnerships across the Commonwealth. In 2010 the theme was "Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts."

For 2012, the Virginia Commission for the Arts and Virginians for the Arts will celebrate Children and the Arts. Between March 1 and June 30, 2012, hundreds of programs and events will honor contributions to arts and culture by children and for children. From visual and media arts to literary and performing arts - Virginia artists, museums, cultural groups, schools and colleges, commercial art galleries, libraries and others are invited to join in the celebration.

To participate as an individual or an organization, simply present at least one public program (art exhibitions, plays, choreography, compositions, photography, films, etc.) - that has either been created by a child/children or features a child/children as the primary focus or audience. There is no charge to participate; however, individuals and/or organizations are responsible for funding their own programs.

MINDS WIDE OPEN will sponsor a statewide marketing campaign centered on a website that will list all initiatives taking place across the state, with contacts for more information, including links to artist and organization websites. In addition, the site will include resources and tools to help promote your MINDS WIDE OPEN event - from downloadable logos and text descriptions to presentation templates and tips for using social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
