Who's Afraid of Virginia's Wolves?

May 22, 2009

ABINGDON, VA -- Advance Abingdon, a Main Street Community organization, in cooperation with Barter Theatre and the William King Regional Arts Center, are bringing a temporary exhibit of fiberglass wolves to Abingdon. The sculptures will be decorated by local artists and displayed along selected streets in the town's business and historic districts, as a cornerstone for Public Art in downtown Abingdon. Maps, posters and t-shirts will promote walking tours to view the artworks.

Across the country, communities showcase their heritage with whimsical sculptures of animals. Chicago, IL, has its cows; Cincinnati, OH, has "When pigs fly"; Lexington, NC, famous for its barbeque, also does pigs and Raleigh, NC had the "Red Wolf Ramble." Guess their animal.

Abingdon has its own animal. The town is steeped in history involving wolves. The original town name was Wolf Hills, based on the story of wolves attacking Daniel Boone's dogs behind the Cave House.

The wolves are expected to be on display by June 6 and to remain on view until October 23 when they will be auctioned, with proceeds going to support activities of Advance Abingdon, as well as a stipend for the participating artists.
