Best in Show prize of $1,000 was awarded to Vera Tracey for her mixed media, "Agony of Addiction,"
The Town of Jonesborough is announces the winners of the Jonesborough Second Annual Open Juried Art Exhibition of 2014.
The art show, known previously as the First Tennessee Bank Art Show, began in Jonesborough years ago, then moved to Johnson City. The town revived the exhibition last year to provide artists the opportunity to compete and exhibit their works locally at the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School in Jonesborough.
This year artists submitted art ranging from mixed media to paintings, including photography, woodworking, etc., giving the show a well-rounded exhibit of artwork. Many of the artists who submitted works for this competition were local. Out of 95 submitted pieces, a total of 71 were chosen for the exhibition.
Daniel Stetson, was the juror for the exhibition and is the Director of the Hunter Museum of Art in Chattanooga.
The show was organized by the Town of Jonesborough's McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School and sponsored by the First Tennessee Foundation and Friendship Ford. Awards of $2,000 were given to the top three artists with the First Tennessee Foundation Best in Show prize of $1,000 awarded to Vera Tracey for her mixed media, "Agony of Addiction," followed by second place which went to Peggy Root for her "Train Bridge, Ohio River," oil on linen receiving $600 in award money. Third place ($400) was given to Charles Jones for his acrylic and graphite on canvas, "Curtain Call." Honorable mentions were given to Ernst Meyer, Mary Nees, Thomas Root, Laura Beth Davidson and Betty Gehre.
This year, The Jonesborough Group, whose members wish remain anonymous, provided funding to add a student competition to the exhibition. The anonymous donation allowed cash prizes to be awarded to the top three winners and scholarships for art classes through Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts in the fall of 2014. Cassie Brooks from University High School won first place for, "Dancing Through Life," and received $300. Robin Happal, of University High School, won second place for "Patchwork," and received $200. Third Place went to Providence Academy student, Audrey Wolfe for "American Gothic," receiving $100. An honorable mention was given to Zula Coley, University High School student, for "Night Shine on a Field."
The exhibit is on display at the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School in Jonesborough, located at 103 Franklin Avenue through July 5.
