Johnson City Jazz Festival begins

the Johnson City Jazz Festival offers six days of jazz at fivevenues with 10 performances from March 27-April 1

A portion of all ticket sales go to benefit regional jazz musicians impacted by Hurricane Helene via Jazz Foundation of America (who aided jazz musicians after Hurricane Katrina). A number of the Friday and Saturday night performers were hit hard by Helene.

The Thursday and Sunday events are free.

Vocalist Marion Edwardswith the Peterson/Perkins Quintet, followed by theJohnson City Jazz Collective with vocalist Ashley Fuqua is on stage at Capone's, Johnson City, Tennessee. The music begins at 7 p.m., March 27.Cocktails and bar food are available.

Cuban jazz guitarist Jorge Garcia’s quartet, followed byjazz bassoonist Michael Rabinowitz’s quartet is at the Johnson City Country Club, Johnson City, Tennessee. The performancesbeginat 7 p.m., March 28.Both bands feature rhythm sections from the Asheville area.

Saturday, March 29 concerts at the Johnson City Country Club beginat 7 p.m., withItalian jazz pianist and composer Margherita Fava’s trio(based in Knoxville and Nashville), followed byvocalist Julie McConnell’s quartet(also Asheville area players).

* Sunday, March 30, a jazz brunch is heldatLittle Magic/Voodoo Chicken, Johnson City, Tennessee,featuring thePeterson Perkins Quintet.

* Monday March 31, the music is at the newly renovated Jackson Theater in Jonesborough, Tennessee, beginning at 7 p.m. It features two bands: TheETSU Jazz Ensemble directed by Martin Walters(who won one of his Grammys for mixing Spyro Gyra) and theTri-Cities Jazz Orchestra directed by Eddie Dalton.
