To celebrate National Poetry Month, A! Magazine for the Arts asked area colleges to submit poetry by their students.

• Celebrating Poetry: Sam Church Samuel Church has spent the last 11 years in east Tennessee, surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains and immersed in a culture that has influenced every aspect of his life.
• Celebrating Poetry: Adam C. Lambert Adam C. Lambert is a native of Jonesville, VA., where he graduated from Lee High School in 2008.
• Celebrating Poetry: Catherine Pritchard Childress Catherine Pritchard Childress will graduate from East Tennessee State Univeristy in May 2011 with a B.A. in English.
• Celebrating Poetry: Matt Fowler Matt Fowler (pseudonym maticusfowl) is not just a poet.
• Celebrating Poetry: Sally Smith Sally Smith is finishing a Creative Writing major at Emory & Henry College.
• Celebrating Poetry: Michelle Ginsberg Michelle Ginsberg was born and raised in Pembroke Pines, Fla., before moving to Raleigh, N.C. six years ago.
• Celebrating Poetry: Carissa Dezort Carissa Dezort is a senior at Virginia Intermont College, majoring in Photography & Digital Imaging, with a minor in Art.
• "Poetic" Achievements Emory & Henry College English professor John Lang takes an extensive look at major poets from the Appalachian region in his most recent book entitled Six Poets from the Mountain South.
• Book Focuses on Literary Connections Sam Rasnake, a Virginia Intermont College creative writing instructor, has released his third collection of published poetry.
• Professor's Poems Nominated for Coveted Prize Felicia Mitchell, chair of the English Department at Emory & Henry College, was recently notified that two of her poems have been nominated for the coveted Pushcart Prize.
• First-Ever Local Arts Index Research Underway Americans for the Arts, the nation's leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts, is conducting its first-ever Local Arts Index that will complement its National Arts Index.

• POPS: The Power of Performing Arts Local children and adults with disabilities are becoming stars on the theater stage, thanks to a new arts program established by a graduate student and faculty member from East Tennessee State University.
• Val Lyle Sculpture Receives Praise International art critic Edward Rubin was given 10 pages to review 12 under-represented international artists. Val Lyle from Bristol, Tenn. got a full page and special mentions in his introduction.
• The Sweet Sound of Traditional Music BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. — Seventh-grader Abbie Davenport stared straight down at her music and tried to ignore the crowd before her, as Holston Middle School students filled the bleachers of the gymnasium.
• ETSU Reece Museum Closing for Renovations With the highest standards of museum operations in mind, the Carroll Reece Museum will temporarily close its doors to the public to start work on a $1.5 million capital maintenance project beginning May 6, 2011.
• Deadlines for JUNE 2011 Print Edition Not too early to plan advertising and event coverage in the June edition of A! Magazine.
• VI Juried Show Winners announced Virginia Intermont College art and photography and digital imaging students recently won accolades and prizes.

• Website Provides Online Community For Writers Chapter 16 is a digital language and literature program of Humanities Tennessee. The Website serves as an online community for writers and readers.
• Winners of Poem-In-Your-Pocket Contest Winners Recently, the Poetry Society of Tennessee-Northeast Chapter sponsored a Poem-In-Your-Pocket Poetry Contest in honor of National Poetry Month (April 2011).
• Whimsical Art Comes to Life Woodworker and cabinetmaker Jake Cress recently discussed his "personified" furniture, on display at the William King Museum in Abingdon, Va.
• Lecturer Laments Arts Education Losses Arts Alliance Mountain Empire and Virginia Intermont College recently presented a lecture by Jeffrey Allison, a VI alumnus who is now an art educator at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond.

• Big River is Quite the Ride Done up with panache and style seldom enjoyed in "dinner" theater, the Big River presentation by Wytheville's Wohlfahrt Haus is far better than a production of the show that I saw a few years back at a very well-respected equity
• Banquet to honor Tribute to Women Winners Four local women involved in the arts are among 12 honorees who will be recognized at the Bristol YWCA's 20th annual Tribute to Women banquet.
